When I come to redecorating I am going to be basing alot of the colour on will my tank look good with this lol.

I agree my aquarium has looked very different over the yrs but went very well with the granite
and my living room decor plus lighting.
My newby is open top tank plus going to hopefully have lilys grow to suface and flower :)

Juwel textured background in my 160l tank which is going to be juvies tank now, and home made :-) 3d background made by myself last week for new 240 fluval roma.
I wouldn't have painted background, just becuse it remindes me of my local pet shop ;-) any texture at the back looks so much better...

3d backgrounds seem to all the rage at the moment.I have seen some excellent ones but the price is just silly.I think the days of wall to wall top to bottom rock rock is a thing of the past.I have seen some 6fts with just low to meduim level rockscaping and they look the business. The best i have seen. When i start my new project i will use black background.

My background is real slate pieces stuck to the glass with silicone sealant. Looks lovely but I haven't stocked the tank yet? :|

from the wholesalers that order aquariums at work & it has been for as long as i have worked there been ,black for tropical & blue for marine as standard 90% of the time .some customers do sometimes go for blue we did one today an 84X26x24 tropical with blue back ground & weir to hide heater & so on looked very nice .it can also come down to what colour wood is being used :( but i went for black back & ends on both of mine

In my main tank I have this 3D Background:
Image

In my new 240 I have painted black, But I have thought about using "Light Diffusing Aquarium Backing" which as far as I know is only used in planted tanks, but if you using with a dim light behind it you can get some amazing effects.

Do you have links to info on the light diffusing backing? Or information on how it works?

I opted for the Juwel 3d rock background (in a 180 vision tank), it has a nice covering of algae on it now and fits in well with the ocean rock.

There's not much info on this stuff, but I will have dig and post up what I find. I have got a roll of it which was for a planted tank (that never happened) You basicly wet the back of the tank (outside) and apply the background and iron out any creases with a ruler, you do this after you have cut itto the size of the tank.

Here's a video ofit in use so you get an idea of what it looks like on the tank (skip to 2:40): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1jCuUJDR ... e=youtu.be

I have voted 'other' as mine will have no background due to being a room divider and viewable from all 4 sides
