Hi All

PostAuthor: dannycelluk » Mon Dec 16, 2013 22:35

Hi All

I am in the middle of setting up my first chilchid tank at work.

It is a fairly small tank, 100L ish

Setup is as follows:-

3ftx1ftx18"
Fluval 304 filter with Amonia media/carbon media/biomax media/polishing pad
ATC-300 temp controller
2 x T5 lights
15kg of occean rock
airstone

I have a salt water tank at home so i know a little about keeping fish but i still have a few questions.

I have been running the tank with just the biomax media and filter spnges for approx 1 month now (no fish). When the tank was started i put some bacteria solution into the water as well as water conditioner. Today i gave the biomax media and sponges a rinse in tank water and installed the amonia/carbon.

PH = 8.4

Will the bacteria have colonised in the media/sponges by now?
What do i need to do before i can add fish?

Cheers

Dan

Hi. First of all :hi and welcome to the forum :good:

I wouldn't of thought the bacteria would have unless you have been feeding it over that period of a month, you might want to consider using tetra safestart which you add at the same time as the fish, as long as your not adding any more that say ten fish it will be fine and is great stuff :good:
cheers,

Cheers guys

Ill give the safe start a go then!

The tank has been up and running for some time now, i have noticed a brown algae starting to grow on the rocks and sand. I have now reduced the lights down from 12hours a day to 8 hours a day. What photo period do you guys use?

Im getting the fish tomorrow, so ill let you know how i get on. Probably going for approx 10 mbunas. any advice/suggestions?

cheers

Dan

Hi

going very well so far!, I got 8 mbunas and 4 very small plecs in the end. I got one slightly larger mbuna than the rest and he was dominating the rest to start with but I think a peccing order has now been established and they all appear to be cohabitating nicely now! time will tell.

I had brown algae growing on the rocks but the plecs have made short work of this and it is now almost completly gone!

Did a 25% water change andsand siphon today and all is going well!

Thanks

Dan
